Courses that are cut out of the wilderness are always so much tougher. I live in PA so we have a lot of them here too. When each hole isn\'t connected to the next hole, any wayward shot is pretty much in the thick, thick woods.
In the more open type courses, you might end up in a neighboring fairway and still be able to get on/near the green for your second shot and save par, or there\'s some pines planted between the fairways but there\'s no brush so you\'ve got a fairly clear shot out while your ball is sitting up on some pine needles.
On these cut out of the wilderness type courses, you\'re taking the penalty stroke or hitting a provisional.
